Peacock Mosaic, House of Dionysos, Paphos Archaeological Park, Cyprus

This mosaic does not represent a myth but is a rather beautiful peacock with a fully spread plumage. The researchers at the Archaeological Park of Paphos believe that the blue within the mosaic is not stone but glass due to the intensity of the colour. It is likely that the glass was manufactured in Paphos as several glass workshops have been discovered. The peacock had mythological importance to Hera. Hera’s servant Argos, whom Hermes murdered, had a hundred eyes. Hera had been aware of the plot to murder Argos and rescued the eyes placing them upon the peacock in recognition and thanks for his service.
