Assyrian Lamassu on Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, Westminster

The northwest plinth in Trafalgar Square was originally intended to hold an equestrian statue of William IV, but remained bare due to insufficient funds. For over 150 years the fate of the plinth was debated; in 1998 it was recommended to hold a rolling programme of temporary artworks rather than settling permanently on one figure or idea to commemorate. Since 28 March 2018, it hosts a recreation of a sculpture of a lamassu (a winged bull and protective deity) that stood at the entrance to Nergal Gate of Nineveh from 700 B.C and was destroyed in 2015 by Isis, along with other artefacts in the Mosul Museum.
