Kinzigtal Storehouse, Black Forest Open Air Museum, Gutach im Schwarzwald, Germany

Kinzigtal storehouses are impressive buildings in terms of the way they are built and their size. The fertile Kinzig valley allowed the rich farmer to erect storehouses which can be regarded as real status symbols. A timbered upper floor, built in 1601, with ground sills, corner posts, roof truss and loft, stands upon a stone-built basement, built in 1746. Built into the upper floor is the actual storeroom, a squared, timber box, above which there is a low mezzanine. This is similar to the nut or slide-in floor of the Kinzigtal houses. Above the mezzanine are the roof timbers to the useable loft.
