The Oil Mill, Black Forest Open Air Museum, Gutach im Schwarzwald, Germany

The oil mill in Bickelsberg was, until 1840, housed in a sandstone building with a tiled roof. It was used to bring in additional income. Not only oil was pressed in the mill; it was also used to make apple juice and cider. People came to do this during the autumn fruit harvest. Oil pressing was basically done during the winter months. People brought their fruits such as rapeseed, poppyseed, walnuts and linseed to make oil for their own supplies. In those days, oil was not just used as a foodstuff. Up and into the 20th century oils were used as fuel for lamps, as varnish and as lubrication.
