The Tanner's Quarter, Schiltach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany

This is the oldest part of Schiltach and has always been situated outside the town walls. The stately timber framed houses were built on the riverside in the 18th and 19th centuries by the tanners where they practised their traditional craft. The "Rotgerber" (red tanners), worked with cowhides to produce the uppers and sole leathers for shoes, and "Lohe (tan) from oak and srruce bark was used in the process. The "Weissgerber" (white tanners) used various salts which produced lighter shades ti the hides of sheep and goats, and these leathers were mainly used to make gloves and trousers.
