The Big Tree is an 800 year old Outeniqua Yellowwood (Podocarpus Falcatus) tree lies within the boundaries of the spectacular Garden Route National Park, on South Africa’s southern coast. This majestic tree towers over the rest of the canopy; standing 36.6 m (120 feet) tall and with a trunk circumference of 9 m - this is a giant among giants. The Outeniqua yellowwood belongs to the same family as South Africa’s national tree, the real yellowwood (Podocarpus latifolius). The Tsitsikamma forests were the center of a thriving timber industry in the Knysna area, until the yellowwoods became threatened.
