San Miguel Castle, Garachico, Tenerife

The Castillo de San Miguel is a defensive tower which is located on the coast of the town of Garachico, in the island of Tenerife. It was built between 1575 and 1577 by order of Felipe II to protect Garachico from possible pirate attacks, as by that time the town was the commercial capital and main port of the island. In 1706 the Arenas Negras volcano eruption buried part of the population and the moat which guarded the castle, making the fortress useless.
