The Canopus canal of Hadrian's Villa, Tivoli
This colonnade has alternating lintels and arches. This curvilinear portico is sometimes called "baroque" because of this stylistic exuberance. The statue in the center, wearing a tall helmet, has been identified as Ares. The other statues, of Wounded Amazon, are copies of the Greek original by Polyclitus. On the right: the crocodile, originally in cipollino marble, was probably part of a fountain since lead pipe was found between his jaws.
