The dual spans of Navajo Bridge are tied at ninth place among the highest bridges in the United States with nearly identical heights of 142.3 m (467 feet) for the original span, and 143.3 m (470 feet) for the second span. Construction of the original Navajo Bridge began in 1927, and the bridge opened to traffic in 1929 (with an official name of the Grand Canyon Bridge). The original bridge is 254 m (834 feet) in length; the roadway offers a 5.5 m (18-foot) surface width. The new steel arch bridge was completed in May 1995 with a total length of 277 m (909 feet) and a 13 m (44-foot) surface width.
