Fernstein Castle is situated dominantly at the slope over the Fernstein mountain pass and the bluish-green Lake Fernsteinsee. Documents prove that already in 1519, the stables of the castle-hotel offered place for 30-70 horses. The castle itself dates back to the 12th century. Since 1780 the castle with its estates became private property as a "Hotel Schloss Fernsteinsee".
