Villa of the Mysteries is famous for having one of the most important decorative fresco collections in the Roman world. The villa originally dates from the 2nd century BC, but its current layout was set between 70 and 60 BC. After the earthquake of 62 AD the villa was extensively remodelled, changing what had been a patrician villa into a working farm-house, albeit a rather grandiose one.
