Earth Pyramids at Longomoso, Renon, South Tyrol, Italy

The earth pyramids were formed in a period during which a number of fundamental and unique factors came into play simultaneously. The substrate must be clay-rich and fine-grained, and must also contain relatively large stones. The moraine deposits found in areas where the terrain is steeply indined and protected from wind, which are already partially consolidated, offer especially favourable conditions. In terms of climate, the process requires heavy rains alternating with prolonged periods of drought. The rainwater erodes the steeply-sloping sides, creating furrows which become more pronounced overtime.
