Ndutu Area - Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania

Ndutu area is situated in the west of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in the southern Serengeti eco-system. Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek form shallow basins where water accumulates from the nearby areas of slightly higher altitude. The water in both lakes is extremely saline (also called soda lakes), too saline for human consumption. From November to May, migratory herds visit the Ndutu area, and provide a feast for the resident predators. Huge numbers of migratory birds come to eat the abundant insects of the plains and to escape the cold European winter. The lakes attract flocks of flamingos and other water birds.
