The Hemp Press, Black Forest Open Air Museum, Gutach im Schwarzwald, Germany

The press was used for obtaining hemp and linen fibres. After extracting them from the plants stems, the fibres were wound into plaits which were then laid on the press. A runner stone rolled over them and crushed any remaining woody bits (boon) and rubbed the fibres soft. Finally, the fibres were combed or heckled.
